Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful Establishes Endowment Fund

Dalton, GA – Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful established an endowment fund with the Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia in February thanks to a matching grant challenge from an anonymous donor. Endowment fund distributions will provide long term support for the non-profit focused on ending litter, beautifying communities, and improving recycling.

“Establishing the endowment fund has allowed us to diversify our income sources ensuring that our mission continues regardless of changes in annual fundraising.” said Patricia Edwards, chairperson for the endowment fund committee. “We are thankful for all of the individuals that contributed towards the matching grant goal. Thanks to you we were able to meet the challenge. We are especially grateful to our anonymous benefactor for giving us this opportunity to guarantee that Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful programs continue long into the future.”

Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful began in 1989 as the Dalton-Whitfield Clean and Beautiful Commission, and soon after became an official Keep America Beautiful affiliate, and member of the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation. The organization is now an independent non-profit with the same mission - to engage local residents in creating a more vibrant community. Board members and volunteers are proud to be a part of a nation-wide effort advancing education and collective action to ensure that beauty is our lasting legacy starting from the local level.

Recent activities have included the launch of the new educational campaign “Love it, don’t trash it!” #LiveLitterFree, a refresh of the Adopt-a-Mile program, unveiling of a mural downtown, beautification mini-grants for schools, and the presentation of the Magic of Recycling magic show at seven elementary schools. Longtime community events include the annual Christmas Tree and Electronics Recycling Day, and the Conasauga River Watershed Cleanup.

The Dalton-Whitfield Solid Waste Authority has announced that it’s four Convenience Centers in Whitfield County will be closed on Saturday, January 7, 2017, due to inclement weather. 

Locations include the Old Dixie Landfill & Convenience Center, McGaughey Chapel Convenience Center in Cohutta, Westside Convenience Center in Rocky Face, and the M.L. King Blvd. Convenience Center in Dalton.

Landfill, Convenience Centers Announce Holiday Hours

Facilities closed in observance of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day

(Dalton, GA, December 16, 2016) –  The Dalton-Whitfield Solid Waste Authority has announced the holiday hours of operation for it’s four facilities in Whitfield County. Locations include

1. Old Dixie Hwy. Landfill & Convenience Center,
2. McGaughey Chapel Convenience Center in Cohutta,
3. Westside Convenience Center in Rocky Face,
4. M.L. King Convenience Center in Dalton. 

All locations will be CLOSED on Saturday, December 24, and re-open on Monday December 26 from 7 am to 6 pm. All four locations will be closing early at 12 noon on Saturday, December 31, then re-open on Monday, January 2 from 7 am to 6 pm.

CANCELLED - Christmas Tree and Electronics Recycling Event Set for Saturday, January 7

Event Cancelled Due To Inclement Weather - Sorry guys! The Christmas Tree and Electronics Recycling Event scheduled for Saturday, January 7 at The Home Depot has been cancelled due to the expected snow and extremely cold temperatures. Please stay home, safe, and warm this weekend!  (Please note: This event is NOT being rescheduled.) 

 

The Home Depot does have a collection area for live natural undecorated Christmas trees set up in the parking lot in front of the garden center. You can still stop by and drop off your tree thru Sunday, January 8. (Monday morning Whitfield County Public Works will be there to collect and chip the trees so they will be recycled into mulch!!)  

 

Electronics can be dropped off year round at the Old Dixie Hwy. Landfill & Convenience Center at 4189 Old Dixie Hwy. in Dalton. There is a $10 fee to recycle television sets and computer monitors with large bulbs or CRTs. Other electronic devices like laptops, video game consoles, and smartphones can be dropped off for free.  The Old Dixie Hwy. location is open Monday to Friday from 7 am to 6 pm, and Saturday from 7 am to 3 pm. Natural, live, undecorated Christmas trees can be dropped off at one of four convenience centers in Whitfield County that have an area to collect yard trimmings or leaf and limb debris. For a convenience center location near you visit www.DWSWA.org. If you have garbage pickup at home from the city of Dalton you may qualify for brush collection at the curb. Whitfield County residents are invited drop off live, natural Christmas trees and used electronic devices for recycling at the community’s annual Christmas Tree and Electronics Recycling event.

On Saturday, January 7, 2017 Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful volunteers will be collecting live, natural, undecorated Christmas trees, and electronic devices from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm at The Home Depot parking lot located at 875 Shugart Road in Dalton. Participants may receive a tree seedling to plant at home, or a promo item from the #LiveLitterFree education campaign that was launched over the summer.  

There is no charge for dropping off live, natural Christmas trees. Trees must be free of ornaments, nails, hooks, wire, tinsel, lights, and other decorations. Only natural, live, real trees will be accepted – no artificial trees please. Trees will be recycled on site into mulch that will be used for beautification projects throughout Whitfield County. 

Please note that there is a $10.00 fee for CRT (cathode ray tube) television sets and computer monitors. Cash only please. However, other electronics can be dropped off for free. These devices include computer consoles, digital cameras, video cameras, cell phones, gaming systems and components, mp3 players, scanners, flat screens, eBook readers, tablets, and laptops.

Before going to the event secure your load for cleaner and safer roads. Tie down and put a tarp on items placed in the back of a pick-up truck, trailer, or on the roof of a vehicle.

If you are unable to attend there are several options available year-round for recycling Christmas trees and electronic devices. 

Whitfield County Public Works staff unload a live Christmas tree during Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful’s annual “treecycling” event. The next event will be on Saturday, January 7 from 8 am to 12 pm.

1.) The City of Dalton Public Works Department will collect Christmas trees from the curb for city residents that have garbage collection service through the city. City residents should call 706-278-7077 to request pick-up. Yard debris is regularly picked up throughout the year every other week.

2.) The four Convenience Centers managed by the Dalton-Whitfield Solid Waste Authority have drop-off areas for yard debris that is recycled year-round. These include the McGaughey Chapel, M.L.King Blvd., Westside, and the Old Dixie Hwy. Landfill & Convenience Centers. 

3.) Electronics are collected for recycling year-round only at the Old Dixie Hwy. Landfill & Convenience Center. For hours of operation and directions to any of the four Convenience Centers visit www.DWSWA.org or call 706-277-2545.

Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful board members have accepted a matching grant challenge for $50,000 to establish an endowment fund with the Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia. The group is already half way to meeting the goal of raising the funds, but requests your participation to make it all the way by the end of year.

Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful is dedicated to creating a more vibrant community by focusing on programs and activities that end littering, improve recycling, or beautify communities. Christmas Tree and Electronics Recycling day, Adopt-a-Mile, #LiveLitterFree, and beautification grants for schools are just a few of the activities held this year.

Proceeds from the endowment fund will go towards events and educational campaigns, not staffing or office space, ensuring your donation will be used to fulfill the mission to create vibrant communities. Gifts to the endowment provide long term support to an organization led by volunteers who live and work locally.
